Washington Times vs Washington Post
Andrew Roth
Starting today (January 1st being as good launch date), I'm going to conduct an ongoing analysis of DC's two leading newspapers. Quite simply, each morning I'm going to post the top headline of each paper. Truthfully, I'm not sure what to expect from this (That's why I'm doing it). Will the Post be less objective than the Times? For all of its resources, does the Post report better than the Times? Are the headlines from either newspaper consistently misleading? In fact, I think it's important to note that this might not be an apples-to-apples comparison. While they both serve the same local market, the Post has a much larger circulation. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the Post has a reported daily circulation of 1,007,487 (4th in the country behind USA Today, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the LA Times). On the other hand, the Washington Times has a circulation of only 100,603 (ranking 113th). The Post is almost certainly read outside of DC and the surrounding area, while the Times is no doubt just a local paper. These different markets might require different headlines, so we should expect some contrast there. I suspect we should also anticipate a lot of duplication. Both newspapers are invariably going to report the same event on the same day (like today's reporting of the Asian Tsunami). However, despite any similarities, the wording of the headlines will be important to analyze. I don't know if this little project will be revealing or not, but let's have some fun with it. In fact, I hope that other blogs might conduct similar experients in other metropolitan areas (NY Times vs NY Post, Chicago Trib vs Chicago Sun-Times, etc.) bq. January 1, 2005 Headlines: bq. The Washington Times US Pledges $350 Million Relief by James Lakely bq. Washington Post US Greatly Boosts Tsunami Aid by Ellen Nakashima and Colum Lynch Additional Point: The headlines above are from the actual newspapers, but I did link them to the corresponding online versions. Interestingly enough, the online headline might be different than the paper headline. The Post's website reports their lead article as "Death Toll From Asian Tsunami Reaches 122,000" instead of "US Greatly Boosts Tusnami Aid", even though the former headline links to the Nakashima/Lynch article.
