HOUSE Key Vote Alert - Feeney Letter

The Club for Growth, with its 40,000 members, plans to score the signatures of a recent coalition letter to President Bush, led by Congressman Tom Feeney, as a pro-economic growth measure in its annual Congressional Scorecard.

Signers of the letter pledge to sustain any veto made by the President on any tax increase submitted to him by Congress.

The problem in Washington hasn’t been a lack of revenue; it’s been a lack of spending restraint. Tax hikes are counterproductive and anti-growth and Congress should vigorously oppose them.

A copy of the letter is reprinted below. To sign onto it, please contact Tonnie Wybensinger in Rep. Feeney’s office at t.wybensinger@mail.house.gov.

Our Congressional Scorecard for the 110th Congress provides a comprehensive rating of how well or how poorly each member of Congress supports pro-growth, free-market policies and will be distributed to our members and to the public.

The White House

Washington, D.C. 20502

Dear Mr. President,

We support your recent statement in the Wall Street Journal, "Now is not the time to raise taxes on the American people."

The first actions of the new House leadership, however, have not been encouraging. New rules for the House of Representatives keep in place a three-fifths requirement to raise taxes, yet this rule can be waived with a simple majority, thus rendering the provision meaningless.

Second, recently passed so-called "PAYGO" rules require an offsetting tax increase for every new tax cut. With PAYGO in effect, extending the more than $1 trillion of tax cuts enacted into law during your term as President will be nearly impossible without tax increases.

Finally, Speaker Pelosi has not ruled out tax increases to finance higher levels of government spending. We strongly believe this is the wrong approach for America. Rather low tax rates coupled with spending restraint is the key to growing the U.S. economy and creating long term job growth.

We strongly encourage you to veto any bill that contains tax increases on working Americans and businesses. Furthermore, we pledge to vote against any congressional effort to override a veto should an attempt be made.

We appreciate your resolve, Mr. President, and look forward to working with you to enact fiscally responsible legislation.
