Club for Growth PAC Endorses Doug Lamborn in CO-05
Washington, D.C. - Building on its 5 - 1 record in the 2006 election cycle, today the political action arm of the Club for Growth, the nation's leading free-market advocacy organization with over 35,000 members, endorsed state senator Doug Lamborn for Congress in Colorado's 5th Congressional District. The seat is being vacated by retiring Republican Congressman Joel Hefley. The 5th District is solidly Republican, so whoever wins the crowded primary will almost certainly go on to win the general election.
"Doug Lamborn has demonstrated a consistently strong commitment to opposing higher taxes," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "He sponsored successful legislation that produced the state's largest income tax cut and actively campaigned against the state measures known as Referendum C&D, which were designed to weaken Colorado's constitutional amendments on limiting spending."
To date, Lamborn has four high-profile opponents in the primary. Jeff Crank, former Administrative Assistant to outgoing Congressman Hefley, has a very spotty record on taxes. In 2003, he supported a sales tax increase and an initiative that would have increased residential property taxes. He also organized support in 2002 to oppose city ballot measures that would have cut taxes and government spending - just to name a few.
Lionel Rivera, the mayor of Colorado Springs, is clearly the most fiscally liberal candidate in the race. He was an ardent supporter for the Referendum C&D opposed by Lamborn. Former El Paso County sheriff, John Anderson consistently supported permanent property tax increases. And although not seen as a serious candidate, former El Paso County commissioner Duncan Bremer voted for three different tax hikes while in office.
"Doug's opponents all have one thing in common - they've all supported higher taxes and spending," Toomey said.
"Colorado's 5th District constituents expect, and America desperately needs, strong, principled members of Congress committed to limited government and lower taxes," Toomey concluded. "I am confident that if elected, Doug Lamborn will deliver on that expectation and need."
During the last election cycle, Club for Growth members donated more than $9 million to the Club's PAC and candidates committed to pro-growth economic policies.
