Senate Leaders Vote for 'Railroad to Nowhere'
Washington, D.C. -- Pat Toomey, President of the Club for Growth, the nation's leading free-market advocacy organization with over 35,000 members, issued the following statement in response to the Senate GOP leadership's failure to cut the "Railroad to Nowhere", which was proposed as an amendment by Senator Tom Coburn:
"Despite their own calls for a Presidential veto threat on the pork-infested war supplemental bill, the Senate Leadership voted to keep the 'Railroad to Nowhere' on track, proving that they'd rather pass the buck than lead the fight for fiscal discipline. The result may very well be that the GOP majority in Congress will be derailed by voters this November.
"To understand the crisis that is occurring in the Senate GOP, consider that a majority of Democrats supported the fiscally responsible amendment to defund the 'Railroad to Nowhere' while only a minority of Republicans did the same."
"By tirelessly fighting to force a public debate on other senators' efforts to use a "must pass" war supplemental bill to fund their own pet projects -- and using every legislative process trick in the book to do it -- Tom Coburn has earned the right to be considered the real leader in the Senate on fiscal discipline."
