Republicans Flip-Flop on the Constitution

Please read this article about campaign finance reform by Byron York of National Review. It's a perfect illustration of how the GOP has totally dropped their allegiance to the 1st Amendment. To summarize, there were 176 House Republicans who voted NO on McCain-Feingold in 2002 because they correctly thought it was unconstitutional. Now most of them are charging forward with the idea of implementing new restrictions on political free speech. And they are doing it simply because they don't like the political opposition. In the York article, Cleta Mitchell, a GOP lawyer and campaign-finance expert, says: bq. "The thing that is so discouraging is that my party, which opposed McCain-Feingold, has become the party that throws in with the guys who want to regulate everything. It just gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach." The feeling is mutual, Cleta. In fact, since the Republican motivation to suppress their opposition is so naked, why don't they just skip these restrictions on 527s and go all the way? Why don't they just bring back the Alien and Sedition Acts and just start jailing their opponents? That will secure re-election!
